In January, 1923, a literary society known as the Sheldonian Society was organized in honor of the founder of our school, Edward Austin Sheldon. On June 12, 1925, the Sheldonian Society became the Clionian Fraternity and was officially recognized as the Iota chapter. Like most of the local organizations on our campus, Clio was a regional organization originally consisting of nine chapters in New York State. In 1951, we became the Beta Tau chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. Three other Clio chapters went national before us. Theta Clio in Buffalo became ASA in 1926. Beta Clio in Oneonta and Gamma Clio in Cortland both became affiliated with ASA in 1946. Alpha Sigma Alpha was founded on November 15, 1901 at Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia. It was the first national sorority founded in the 20th century. For three years we were the Beta Tau chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha. In 1954, New York State passed a law forbidding national organizations on state university campuses and all four chapters of Alpha Sigma Alpha became local sororities. Because we did not go back to Clio, we truly became a local organization and have grown and prospered as Alpha Sigma Chi.
